Dr Laura Charlton is a Highly Specialist Clinical Psychologist at the UK’s national Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS), Leeds base. Having several years’ experience working in clinical health psychology, she was appointed to the GIDS in 2014. Dr Charlton offers specialist assessment and therapeutic support to gender diverse young people and their families, in addition to consultation to professionals within local networks. Dr Charlton is actively involved in clinical research and service development within the GIDS and has led on major projects including new pathways for older adolescents and younger aged children. She is the GIDS Transitions lead for Northern England and is striving to improve transition experiences for young people entering into adult transgender healthcare services across several sites. Dr Charlton has presented at several International conferences including the World Professional Association for Transgender Healthcare (Amsterdam, 2015; Argentina 2018), the British Association of Gender Identity Specialists (Leeds, 2016) and the European Professional Association for Transgender Healthcare (Belgrade, 2017). She has provided clinical supervision to trainee and qualified psychologists and has taught on the University of Leeds doctoral clinical psychology programme for several years.
