Ana Isabel F. Guerreiro is an international child rights expert whose work focuses on how to improve children’s lives through better legislation, policies and services in different contexts. She has collaborated with the World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe for a number of years, for whom she has developed tools, strategies and processes to use the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child as a framework for improving the quality of care for children and adolescents. Specifically, the designed the Manual and Tools for the Assessment of Children’s Rights in Primary Health care, the Child Rights Rapid Assessment Checklists for Hospitals and contributed to the draft of the European Strategy and the Assessment Tool on School Health Services. She was also part of the Editorial Team that prepared the Pocket Book of Primary health care for children and adolescents: Guidelines for Health Promotion, Disease Prevention and Management from the newborn period to adolescence. She has also worked for UNICEF in advancing and implementing the Child-Friendly Cities and Communities Initiative in various countries and other international and civil society organisations. She has published a number of peer-reviewed articles of interest to child rights and adolescent health, including Adolescent and young adult patients as co-researchers: A scoping review (Health Expectations, 2021 with Fløtten K et al.), Thirtieth anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child: advancing a child rights-based approach to child health and well- being (BMJ Paediatrics, 2020 with Goldhagen J, Clarke A, Dixon P, et al., Informed Consent - Vision and Perspectives of Adolescents, Parents and Professionals: Multicentric Study in Six Hospitals (Acta Med Port, 2019, with Machado et al.) and Assessing and improving children’s rights in hospitals: Case-studies from Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Moldova (Harvard Journal of Health and Human Rights, 2016, with others), among other. In 2022, she published the first book of the “Children’s Rights in Practice Series”, entitled “Children’s Rights in Health care Practice: A Guide for Doctors, Nurses and other health care professionals”.
